CATHOLIC GALA.
The Riccarton racecourse presented a festive appearance yesterday afternoon, when the annual Catholic Demonstration in honour of the Patron Saint of Ireland was held. Special trains carried out the holidaymakers, who at one time in the day must have numbered over 2000. On the ground music was supplied by the Stanmore Brass Band, and sports and games of all kinds were indulged in. Refreshments were previded on the ground. The following are results of the races:— Altar Boys' Race-H. Mills 1, R. Delahunty 2. St. Patrick's Handicap, 100 yards—First heat— J. W. Howard 1, C. Vale 2. C. Barnett 3. ■ -•
Married Women's Race— Mrs Frawley 1, MrsDunick 2.
Second Heat St. Patrick's Handicap, 220 yards—C. Vale 1, F. J. Malley 2, A. Donohue 3.
Single Women's Race—Miss Barnett 1
Bicycle Race— J. O'Brien 1. Third Heat St. Patrick's Handicap, 440yds -J. Rodriey 1, F. J. Malley 2, 5. Vale 3.
On points C. Vale takes first prize, F. J. Malley second, and R. Rodney and J. W. Howard tie for third prize. The tug-of-war between teams from the St. Mary's Parish and the Pro-Cathedral caused a great deal of excitement. The St. Mary's team won, and well deserved the medals that were awarded to them.
Owing to rain coming on for a time several of the events were obliged to be postponed. The excursionists returned t4 the railway station, no mishap having marred the day's enjoyment.
