ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
The anniversary of the patron saint of Ireland was celebrated with due honour yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired for outdoor excursions, though a cold southerly wind, with rain, came up late in the afternoon. The Catholics, not alone from the city but also from all parts, mustered in great force, and went off gaily to the Racecourse, where sports and races were held most successfully, and provision was also made for the children. The officers worked most zealously to make the affair a success. The lovers of trotting had a goodly day provided for them at New Brighton, and there was a large gathering there also. The Sumner people had arranged a very pleasant gala and regatta, and the cars on the line were filled to overflowing. There were also races at Oulverden and Waimate. In the city itself there , were but few people in the streets. At night the] only entertainment was Mr Bland Holt's farewell at the Theatre Royal.
The weather at Timaru yesterday was showery and cold for the holiday. The principal attraction was the St. Patrick's Association eports, the great feature of which were the bicycle races. Ralston won the half-mile race, Barker the one and a half mile, Clarkson the two mile, Barker the three mile scratch, and Clarkson the five mile races. H. Reynolds, the Irish champion, competed in all but the half-mile, but was not successful. (PBKSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, March 17. Several thousands of people were at Ngaruawahia for the regatta, but rain fell heavily, and delayed the Erst race. WELLINGTON, March 17. A heavy gale blew in the night, followed by rain, but this morning was.bright, and there was a perfect day for the holiday, although it was slightly windy. The principal celebrations were the Hibernian sports on the Basin Reserve and picnics.
