HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

Autumn Mketino -Skcosp Day.

CBy Tklkgraph],

(FROM OUR SPKCIAL CORRESrONDKST.) NAPIER, March 17. With the exception of a passing gale »ntl a shower as the last race was being run, the day was fine, but the attendance waa of a limited character. The racing, however, was particularly good, and the battle royal for the Hawke's Bay Stakes, between the Hon. J. I). Ormond'a Daunt and Mr G. G. Stead's Gold Medallist will ever be remembered by those who were lortanate enough to be present. It was a keen struggle indeed—the pair being well together for the l*st three furlongs, and neither being separated by more than a length from the jump, the nane being terrific. Gold Medallist ran the first quarter in 24gsec8, and the last half mile took 49sec. The Southern colt slipped below the distance, and that may have meant the difference between victory and defeat. The greatest excitement prevailed while the two colte were gamely contesting every inch of the ground, which culminated in a wild frenzy of delight and cheering at the success of the local candidate. The race had previously been won twice in succession by Mr G. G. Stead's representative. Zanella, the favourite, did nofc show true form in the March Handicap, in which Woodstock was ridden right out, to win by the margin he cKd. The foiling of Plain Bill and Sultador iv the Hurdle Race robbed it of interest, bat the backers of Rhino were well rewarded. The Dude rather surprised his connections and the public in the Pacific Handicap, paying just on £20. Primula ran better in the Burke Handicap than on t the first day, and White slipped the opposition from the half mile poet. Scotia was unruckyin the Juvenile or would have won. The withdrawal of Nansen caused the public to support Sir Lancelot for the Farewell Handicap in which he strode home cleverly, Mahaki, Dofctrell and Nightingale each had bad luck in the race. The sum of £5052 passed through the totalisator, being £s/8 teas titan tbe second day last year. Results?— MARCH HANDICAP, of 100 *ovs ; second 10 soys from the stake. One mile.
