ADVANCE OF THE DERVISH
FORCES

Reports from Berber state that the forces under Mahmoud, the Dervish general, and Osman Digna, left Shendy, on the Nile, between Metemrneh and, Qindaraian, on the 12th inst., and are rapidly advancing northwards. The Askaris, from Kassala, captured a Dervish position beyond the Atbara river, and the Dervishes lost twenty men. During the fight a son of Osman Digna narrowly escaped being captured. Received March 17th, 10.40 p.m. Cairo, March 16. The Egyptian troops have ejected the Dervishes from Sbebaliya Island, killing thirty. Mahmoud's advance party has arrived within five miles of the Atbara. Six squadrons of Egyptian cavalry have left Kunar in order to get in touch with the enemy. The railway line has now been completed for the distance of seventythree miles south of Abu Hamed, and the river Atbara has been made navigable to Shendy.
