ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
At the Addington workshops yesterday as a man named James Hanna was placing the block beneath the steam hammer, the latter was accidentally allowed to descend. It fell upon the thumb of hie left hand, crashing it so severely that it was found necessary to amputate it. On Sunday night, when the Be?. James Maxwell and hie daughter were driving home to Waddington from Darfield, the horse took fright at something and they were thrown out of the buggy on to the road. The lady escaped with little more than a severe fright, but Mr Maxwell was badly bruised about the face, and, has one of his arms injured; A settler hear by rendered assistance and drove Mr and Misa Maxwell home. GeneraUympathyis expressed for the sufferers. The horse ran away after the accident and was recovered at Darfield, with the boggy badly damaged. (PBESS ASaOOUTIOV TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 14. Robert Sergeant, a man sixty years of age, employed by P. Williams, fish dealer, slipped in Wyndham street, and fell under the feet of a horse, which lashed out and struck him on the temple and then dragged the wheel of a cart across his throat. Death was almost instantaneous.
