(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELTCGRAM.)
A fire took place last evening in a bedroom in Detective Henderson's house, Barbadoes stroet, between Worcester and Hereford streets. His son went out and gave *'<efc»'*ilm-mH^^ sufficiently to give a genuine alarm, therefore recording out of circuit at both stations. The engines were horsed read£_;for going out, but the men could see no signs of fire and therefore did not- go. Shortly afterwards Superintendent Smith was informed of the fire and visited the place, but when he got there the flames were gout. The fire seems to have been caused by a lighted candle being left on the cheat of drawers near a kerosene lamp. The chest was burnt through and a quantity of clothes destroyed. The house would have certainly gone but for tho exertions of two people next door. About £50 or £60 worth of damage was done. When the fire started a little girl had the presence of mind to catch hold of the baby and rush down stairs. Detoctive Henderson was away at the time.
AUCKLAND, October 20. The old Whatawhata Hotel was totally destroyed by fire last night. It was occupied by Mr McLeish as a boarding-house. The building was insured for £150.
