AN ILLEGAL ART UNION.

J. J. Connor, jun., Secretary to the Dunedin Amatenr Boating Club Art Union, was yesterday charged with establishing a certain lottery, by whicli prizes of goods, wares and merchandise were gained, drawn for and competed for by lottery. As tho police did not press for a heavy penalty, the accused having pleaded " Guilty," a fine of £1 and costs was imposed on the first [charge, and five others were withdrawn. The offence consisted in joining a bicycle and other articles to works of art of nominal value. As it is understood that the Clnb will realise ovev £300 after paying off its debts, the fine will not hurt it.
