THE RAND GOLD RETURNS.

The Johannesburg monthly gold returns are aa wonderful ac ever. The output for the month of June was 251,5200z., being the greatest yet recorded. The total output for the first half of the year is 1,388,4300r-, against 1,052,2140z. for the first half of 1896 »nd 1,113,5470z. for the first half of 1896. It ie now probable that the output for

the current year will fall liltle short of 3,000,0000z. of a value, at £3 83 per oz. t of about ten millions sterling. Whether deeplevel mining pays at Johannesburg or not, it is certain that the yield has been largely augmented by the deep-level mines. The Johannesburg mines are unique, for according to various estimates there is still several hundreds of millions of pounds' worth of gold to be taken out ot them. The banket formation ia one of the mining wonders of the world.
