FOOTBALL.
A benefit match arranged by the bootmakers in aid of Mr Whittakev was played at Lancaster Park yesterday afternoon, between a team from the bootmakers and Thursday players. The attendanco was I moderate. The game in the first spell waa [ fimiy even, but in the second the Thursday players kept their opponents on the defensive, and had no difficulty in winning by 16 points to 5 points. For the winners Hunter, Petrie, Vangiom and Thompson scored tries, two of which were converted, and for the losers T. O'Brien scored a try, from which Glennic kicked a goal. Mr A. J. Lawrence acted as referee.
The annual football match, Post and Telegraph v Railway, took placo yesterday at Lancaster Park, and produced a very lively match, resulting in ft win for P. and T., scores being P. and T. 12 points, Rail■way 7 points. For P. and T. King scored two tries, Brooker converting one, and also kicking a goal from a mark. Gerard, Chambers, McDonald, Gray, Watts and Kodgers played well. For the Railway Dansey, Thomas, Smith, West and Bailey played well. Thomas scored a try, which Dansey converted, and he also kicked a goal from u> mark. Mr W. Garrard acted aa referee!
The Following teams will take part in the football match Prkss v Whitcombe and Tombs, which will be played in the North Park tomorrow :—Prkss—Halo, Eastwood, Smith, Alexander, Taylor, Maddren, King, Moyle, Blewett, Agasiz, Childe, Sandford, S. Asquith,Strongand Fry ; emergency, Darby. Whitcombe and Tombs—Ditford, Wilkins, Witeon, Beattie, Tacon, Dickensou, McPhwl, Criifen, Ormandy, Jennings, Allard, Harrow, Luekwood, Gumberworth and Cumber' ford: emergencies, Hopkins and Wright, jun. Mr A. P. Izett will referee.
The final trial match before the selection of the Canterbury representative team takes place at Lancaster Park to-morrow afternoon.
I The Schools Tournament commences on the Christ's! College ground to-morrow afternoon, when tlie Collego meet the representatives from the Wanganui Collegiate School, who arrived yesterday by the Rotorua. A match was played at Leeston on Wednesday between Rtik.iia and Leeston Clubs, resulting in a win for Leeston by 28 points to nil. Right tries were obtained. Herron three, Ballagh two, Fincham, Rennie and Graham one each, and Herron potted a goal. In the first spell, when alkthe points were made by Leoston, Rakaia played two men short. In the second spell, playing with a full team, Rakaia by good defensive play stopped Leeaton from scoring. On Saturday last Leeston played against and defeated Hororata by 12 points (four tries) to 3 points {one try.) (PBBSS ASSOCIATION , TKLKORAMS.) WELLINGTON, August 26. The Wellington RugUy Union has yielded to the representations of the Canterbury Union, who can only play on the 4th September, and has fixed the Christchurch match for that date; Southland Bth, and Otago 11th. The Canterbury team will be picked on Tuesday after the evening practice. NELSON, Auguet 26. At a meeting of the Rugby Union a resolution was unanimously passed expressing entire confidence in the management of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and seeing no necessity to transfer the headquarters to any other province.
