NEW ZEALAND.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, August 24. Charles William Henry White, a young man with numerous aliases, was committed on a charge of perjury, namely, swearing, at the Supreme Court, to the effect that with the exception "of twenty-four hours' imprisonment at Timaru, he had never at any time been*imprisoned in the colony, and was not arrested for maiming a horse, and not convicted of an offence at Wellington, and he never served a sentence of twelve months imprisonment for maiming a horse or for anything M'hatever.

One of the series of burglaries now being committed almost nightly has taken place at the shop of Mr L. Goldwater, jeweller, son of Mr Goldwater, of Hobson street. It was broken into and about £13 worth of clocks, brooches and other articles stolen. The place is situated in Victoria street west and was locked up securely at 10 p.m., but on returning an hour later the owner found that his shop had been entered in his absence. Entrance must have been effected by means of skeleton keys, as the locks on the doors and windows were intact.

WELLINGTON, August 24.

The departure of the Hinemoa for the wreck of the Tasmania has been postponed till to-morrow, and it is not certain whether she will get away even then.

A public meeting was held to-night to discuss the Mayor's scheme for funding the city overdraft and polling the ratepayers regarding a loan of £36,000 for city improvements, also that a large area at the Miraniar Peninsula be purchased as a park. There was a large attendance, and eventually an amendment was carried that the overdraft proposal be re-cast and debentures issued ; that provision be made for urgent city works ; that no borrowing be undertaken without a poll of the ratepayers; and that no portion of the Miramar estate be purchased.
