At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Manufactures, the report stated that the removal of Customa duties had resulted in decreased employment in a considerable number ol industries. Over 1800 less hands were employed in the manufactories than in the previous year, and it was also causing boys to be largely employed in the place of men. There is much dissatisfaction itt mining circles at the Government allowing the Mc&rthur-Forrest syndicate to amend its patent, giving il the sole right to work the solution of cyanide. The Chambec of Mines has resolved to take immediate steps to suppress the monopoly. It points out to the Government that the patent has been overruled in other countries, and considers that it should be treated as a national matter asd defended by the country.
