THE COMMONWEALTH BILL.
ALMIGHTY.
RECOGNITION OF THE
AN EXTRAORDINARY SPEECH,
Press Association—By Telesrraph—Copyriffht. Melbourne, August 24. When the preamble to the Commonwealth Bill was being dealt with in the Legislative Assembly, ou the motion of the Attorney-General, an amendment was carried, adding the words "In relianoe on the blessing of Almighty God." Mr Longmore rose before the question was put, saying that he would vote for the amendment under protest, and then treated the House to a torrent of denunciation. He considered that putting the name of God in such a Bill as the Commonwealth Bill was blasphemy in the face of high Heaven. He had a place before his mind where they open the proceedings with prayer, and say ' Give us this day our daily bread," but in their hearts and in their actions they say "If you don't give mc the poor man's loaf I will take it by force." " They are blasphemers in the sight of God, and I say" Woe unto you Pharisees and hypocrites; you have seized the whole of our territory and you will not allow any man to live."
