RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

TO THB EDITOR OF THB PHISSS. SIR,---Would you grant ihe -pace in Veinvaluable paper re the management of our railways and trains running late, particularly on the North line, through overloading. This, in particular, WdS the case on Tuesday laßfc on the evening train from Culverden, on which I was a passenger. Having previously some considerable experionce on railways I took particular notice of the men working this train, especially the enginemen, Who, I am '-..informed,' suffer repeatedly for this lato running. The engine on this occasion Wag laboufiiig most heavily to cope with the-traffic, and, in my opinion, the blame should fall upon the right shoulders, which is undoubtedly the management for not supplying greater power to haul suoh heavy loads, or why it Should be so blind in keeping an engine at Amberley three of four hours waiting to iun its goods train to Rangiora, and should have been utilised to relieve this train from Waipara, and the evening train run to its proper time. There are numerous cases of late running through overloading, parti-U----larly on these excursion trains, * simply for the want of forethought in the officials not supplying the necessary power to"-.haul them, namely, the late Little Rivet* excursion, Amberley Caledonian and Culverden races excursions, which is sufficient to show the management is not competent tb judge of the requirements,'and. it. is high time a chahge was made in this direction, Which would be better for the workers and comfort in travelling tS the public generally. —Yours. &o. t ■«.'"■'•■. Ex-RailwaYman. Christchurch, April lbtli, 1897.
