A special meeting of the Drainage Board was held yesterday afternoon. PresentMessrs J. Deans (Chairman), C. Burgess, J. Down, E. Smith, W. -E. Samuels, C. Palairet, R. M. Taylor, and Geo. Mclntyre. Ad apology was received for the absence of Mr K. Hill Fisher.

The meeting confirmed tne motion striking the usual rates.

An ordinary meeting of tha Board was then held, at which the same members were present. _. The Secretary and Treasurer reported :— Amount of rates received since last meeting, £750 Os 5d : received from other sources, £34 5s 8d; expenditure since last meeting, £658 3s ; amount of 1894 rates outstanding, £30 8s; amount of 1895 rates outstanding, £74 Is IOd; amount of 1896 rates outstanding, £546 IS 7d ; amount of 1896 rates collected to date, £18.661 lis 7d; amount of debit balance, £97 9s Bd. The Engineer reported that the stoppage of the overflow drain at Hargood's road had been rectified, and that there was nothing serious the matter with the drain at the Canal reserve, nor No. 1 drain from the Canal reserve to Horseshoe lake road. Mr Bull had made an offer to widen No. 1 drain when required at 6s per chain, the length being about twenty chains. The report was adopted. On the recommendation of the Avon Road Board*£l 18s was remitted on unpaid rates.

The Charitable Aid Board wrote, that as there was evidently a difference of opiniou between the Board and the Linwood Council as to what public authority was responsible for the Female Refuge drain, the Charitable Aid Board proposed to arrive at a definite determination by stopping it up just within the north fence unless action was taken within one month to comply with the Board's request. The Linwood Council wrote, asking the Board what it proposed to do in the matter of the said drain.

It was decided that the Board would supply the pipes if they were laid to the approval of the Board.

The Governing Body of Christ's College asked the Board if, in lieu of 40 chains of the present drain into the River Styx, from a point in R.S. 322, opposite the south-east corner of Mr J. Corr's land, part of R.S. 150, it would carry a drain from that point a distance of about 16 chains, with a fall of 12ft direct into the River Styx, thereby immensely improving the drainage, and also relieving the Board of the maintenance of about 24 chains of drain.

The Engineer reported that the cost would be considerable, and that he could not recommend deepening the old drain. It was decided that should the owners of property consent to the drain going through their property the Board would again consider the matter. At present nothing could be done by the Board. After granting a pipe-layer's license and passing accounts the Board adjourned.
