ELLESMERE.
The ordinary meeting of the Ellesmere Board was held on March Ist. Present— Messrs G. C. Waby (Chairman), W. McMillan, Wm. Nixon, A. Chamberlain and R. Lochhead. Correspondence was read— From Mr G. Bailey, asking the Board to reconsider his application for putting a stop on the drain on the I. well and Brookside road. From Mr W. Woodman, objecting to any obstruction to overflow of creek. The Board resolved that Messrs Bailey and Woodman be informed that the Board will allow the creek to be diverted for a reasonable time to allow the willows to be taken out, but the interested parties must be responsible for auy damage done to the road or fences. A petition was received from T. W. Mawson and nine others, asking the Board to shingle the Brookside and Dunsandel road from J. Henderson's to the Brookside Creamery. It was decided to call for tenders for shingling this road. Messrs Izard and Loughnan wrote, claiming compensation on behalf of Mrs T. McCormack, who had been thrown out of a trap on the North Rakaia road. It was decided to express sympathy with the lady but that the Board does not accept any responsibility. The Land Board wrote, asking the Board to explain its action in cutting a drain through Mr Thian's land, Lake flat. It was decided to inform the Board that the drain had been in existence over twenty years, and had lately been cleaned out for the benefit of the adjoining road. .Mr John Boag, jun., wrote, asking for the use of the shingle reserve at Brookside for a playground for scholars. The Board decided to consider the application at the termination of the present lease. The Lands and Survey Department wrote, informing the Board that a Royal Commission had been appointed to report on the rebuilding of the Selwyn .bridge at Ellesmere. Messrs Waby, McMillan,, and Chamberlain were appointed to represent the Board at the enquiry. The Selwyn County Council wrote acknowledging receipt of £250 for charitable aid, and agreeing to pay the balance out of funds. Personal interviews were received from Mr A. Anderson, asking the Board to clean out tlie Leeston creek running past his property. Granted. From Mr S. C. Doyle, applying for a bridge over Boggy creek through his laud on to the Lake Flat. The Board decided that it could not assist Mr Doyle. Mr P. McCabe complained of the action of Mr Greener in raising the road opposite his gateway, also that too small pipes were put across the gateway. It was decided to inspect and report. Mr S. Graham applied that the shingle for Lake road should be taken out of the Hanmei-'s road drain. Approved, on condition that the interested parties indemnify the Board against any damage Messrs Belton and Allen applied to have the drain on Hight's road deepened. It was decided to undertake the work on the usual conditions. The overseer's report was considered. It was decided to offer Mr J. McVinnie one-half the cost of cleaning out the mouth of Lambies's drain; to expend a small sum in improving drainage in Doyleston ; to clean the main drains of the district upon the application of interested parties, and upon payment of their proportion of cost, and to give the contractor for shingling Frampton's Drain road notice to proceed with his contract at once. The pay sheet, amounting to £193 8s Id, was passed.
