HEROISM.
An act of heroism was mentioned in con. noction with the accident to tho Oratava,by which five lives were lost, while she was coaling, and the coroner's jury vory properly commended the conduct of Stephen Reed, one of the witnesses, who had, at the risk of his own life, mado way for a lad to piss him, and thus enable him to escape from tho fate whioh befell his companions. It should be remembered, as enhancing tlie heroisii. of this and similar deeds, that they aro done under surrounding circumstances which are in themselves fearful enough to unnerve and paralyse even tiie strongest men. It is easier to bo horoic in the full light of day than in the awful darkness of a mine, a sewer, or a ship's hold, faoe to face with the prospect of death in its most terrifying form.
