Monsieur Pollet, the Belgian Consul, general for Australasia, residing in Melbourne, has just received Avorcl from Monsieur De Gerlacke, the loader of the Belgian expedition (now being fitted out for an expedition to the South Pole), that Mr Louis Bernacchi, at present studying at the Melbourne Observatory, has been appointed on the scientific staff of tho expedition The expedition is to leave Belgium in July, and will probably call at Melbourne or Hobart on their way to the Autarctic. Mr Louis Bernacchi for some time attended the Hut-chins School, and will represent tho Victorian Observatory on the trip. It j a to be hoped that arrangements may be nmde for the representation of New Zealand.
