JAPANESE COMPETITION.
Some interesting information has been supplied by the Committee appointed by the Governor of Hong Kong to inquire into the competition of Japan in the markets of that colony and South China. This report states that Japan has secured the monopoly of the trade in cotton waste, washing soda, and sulphuric acid, and that competition is very keen in cotton goods, cheap substi; tudes for cretonnes, blankets, towels, soap, &c. The report points out that Japanese cotton half hose, well made, are sold in Hong Kong at half the cost of similar goods made in Germany. Japan is also supplying cement in large quantities considerably cheaper than it can be produced in Hong Kong, notwithstanding the expense of freight and other charges. Very recently a large contract has been made for the supply of Japanese cement in connection with the defence works now under construction in the Straits Settlements. The quality of Japan cement is stated to be inferior only to the best Portland. The arrival of the second steamer, Omi Maru, of the new line at Brisbane is announced, and it will be a matter of interest to watch the part which Japan intends to take in exploiting the Australian markets.
