NEW ZEALAND TRADE WITH WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
An unwelcome development in connection with the transit trade between New Zealand and Western Australia (says the Melbourne Argus) is now occurriug. The Union Steamship Company carry produce from New Zealand ports to Sydney.at lower rates than to Melbourne, while the lines trading from Sydney and Melbourne to Western Australia are now making the same rates from both ports. The result is that produce can be exported from New Zealand to Western Australia more cheaply via Sydney than via Melbourne. The one port gains and the other loses the commission on the business and handling charges, besides mercantile prestige, which always counts.
