CALLING ON THE POLICE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.
Sir,—My attention'has been called .to a paragraph *in your issue of yesterday, where, at a meeting at Lauriston, sorrow and surprise was expressed that any resident should think it necessary to bring a policeman to keep order at any meeting at Lauriston.
My name was mentioned as being the responsible party for the attendance of the man in blue. Allow mc to say, .Sir, that I did oak the policeman to attend, as from
my experience at a meeting two nights previous I had every reason to expect a row. I feel proud to think that my efforts in the interests of law and order were crowned with anoh complete success. The amazement on the countenances of the would-be rowdies when they caught sight of the man in blue well repaid mc for any trouble I may have gone to. I may also say that if I consider it necessary I will do the same tiling again, either to preserve order for Mr Wason, Mr Taylor, or any other elector who may desire to address a meeting of citizens on any matter of public importance.—Yours, &c., J. Walt,_.c_.
Lauri-ton, November 25th. P.S.—For a pieoe of hypocritical cant commend mc to the resolution passed at Mr Saunders's Bar.hill meeting.
