JOHN BRIGHT AND MR CHAMBERLAW.
Not every prophecy comes true, but one uttered by John Bright has been realised. "It may interest you to know," said Mr Justin McCarthy to a Great Thoughts interviewer, "that John Bright told mc, in the days of Mr Joseph Chamberlain's most ardent Radicalism, that he believed Mr Chamberlain was bound to become a great Conservative before many years had passed by. A singular instance of foresight," Mr McCarthy added, "particularly when you consider that it was made such a long time before the event. In fact, Bright did not live to see his prophecy fulfilled. I have a great regard for Mr Chamberlain's ability." Mr McCarthy also, on the same occasion, did a bit of prophesying himself. He said he thought that Mr Chamberlain's son is almost, if not quite, as clever as his father. "He is young yet, as politicians go," added Mr McCarthy, " but I think, if he lives, Austen Chamberlain will occupy a prominent position in the world of politics.'
