THE PARENTAL LENLENCY.
Another sign of degeneration, remarks the Westminster Gazette. Parents no longer punish bad boys as they did in the "good old times." jSuch was the opinion expressed by Mr Willis, an Industrial School officer, in the North London Police Court recently. A thoroughly bad boy was then charged with " being of such a disposition as to bo beyond . the control of his parents "—a curious kind of charge, we confess. Asked what steps he had taken to reform his son, the father replied that he had smacked him. " Smacked him ?" said the Magistrate, Mr Paul Taylor, disparagingly. "Ho would need something harder than that." Mr Taylor subsequently delivered a little lecture on the perils of parental leuiency, with an excursus on the value of "a sound thrashing in a proper manner." Considering, however, that this parent had "smacked 5 ' his son so as to bruise him, we hardly think there was any need to incite him to do more.
