THE CHRISTCHURCH SEAT.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —I was glad to read that Mr Charles Lewis had determined to again ofier his services to the Christchurch electors, and am confident of his success. At this stage it will not be out of place to give a hint to those who supported Mr O. J. Smith at the last general election. It is understood that the latter gentleman is likely to "tack " himself to Mr T. E. Taylor, and that the two will be candidates in the prohibition interest. It was, I believe, at one time intended to run also Mr T. Wake, but his departure has doubtless put an end to such a contingency. Mr Smith received at the last election a large amount of support from others than prohibitionists, but as the National Association purposes nominating three candidates, that support instead will no doubt be given to them. I see no reason why Mr Smith, whom I look upon as anything but a strong politician, should again expect support from those against whose interest- he has occasionally voted. If the same amount of enthusiasm and energy is displayed at the forthcoming general election as obtained at the recent by-election the return of the three Opposition candidates is practically assured.—Yours, &c, Hopkf.l. Christchurch, 11th September, 1896.
