ORNAMENTAL WATER IN HAGLEY PARK.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRES3. Sir, —I was much pleased to see Mr Purdie's letter advocating the formation of a sheet of ornamental water in Hagley Park. If funds are not obtainable to do the work by day labour, I think his suggestion that it should be done hy working bees an admirable one. Now that the matter has been started, I hope the pot will be kept boiling until something practical has been done. Some money could no doubt be got by subscription, but I think an immediate commencement should be made by working bees. There is lots of muscular energy going to waste that could be utilised in this direction to the benefit of all parties. Any expenditure of money or energy in beautifying ChrisLchurch and its neighbourhood will be recouped a hundred times over. Some years ago there wa3 started in Dunedin an Amenities Society whose object was the beautifying of that city and its suburbs. Why not start one here ? It would do an immense amount of good, make the place attractive, and so encourage people to come. There is no reason why Christchurch should be behind the age in these matters. With the exception of the river the natural beauties of the town are nil. For this reason it re - qxiires more than any other town in New Zealand to be supplemented by art. Plenty of comfortable seats are urgently needed. Two or three wooden benches without backs are all that the place can boast of. Everybody has not got a cast iron spine. Hagley Park is rendered half useless by this absence of resting places. People from a distance reaching the park wearied with walking have 110 place to sit except the damp ground. If the Domain Board are too fossilised or poverty stricken to rfind resting places for the public some-' thing should be done by subscription liste to which I should be happy to contribute. The Corporation of Christchurch should also do their share by providing comfortable seats in the square and along the banks of the river without delay,—Yours, &c, Up to Bats.
