BACK COUNTRY SETTLERS.
A young man named To}' was brought into the Wanganni Hospital (says the Wanganui Chronicle) from Raetihi, suffering from a very painful illness. His is an instance of the hardships which those in the back country have occasionally to endure. As is well known, Pipiriki i§ the terminua for the river steamers, and to reach the boat the poor sufferer had to be carried a great distance—nearly twenty miles—across a rough country track. Some thirty of his fellow-settlers and companions formed tho escort and took " turns " in carrying him to Pipiriki.
