RICCARTON.
The ordinary meeting of the Riccarton Board was held on Juue 8lh; Present— Messrs Hail, I&ag, Nunweek, Denett, and On &he motion of Mr Nunweek, seconded by Mr Jackson, Mr H. J. Hall was re-elected Chairman. Mr Hall took hia seat, and? thanked the members. Correspondence wae read—From the Selwyn County Qierk, enclosing statement of the amount chargeable against the die trie b on account of hospitals and charitable aid (£456 9a 7d), and asking if the Board will collect a rate of 3-20lh of a penny in the £ to meet the charge or pay itou6 of ordinary | funds. It was resolved to pay the amount oue of ordinary funde. From Mr (£. ~**fl. Stanley, applying- to have the ditch on Dury's road.cleaned out, and calling attention to the state of the culvert crossing the road. It was reeolved to comply with Mr Stanley* request. From the Clerk Avon Road Board, forwarding resolution re maintenance of boundary roads. The following resolution was carried unaniThat" in the opinion of the 'Riccarton Road Board, the law at present in force with;respect to tho, maintenance of boundary roads is not satisfactory; and that the Government be requested to amend clause 86 of the Public Works Act, 1882, bo that Road Boards may" have & voice in the maintenance of borough boundary roads, and that the provisions of clause 85 of the said Act should apply to boroughs." The Clerk waa directed to forward a copy of the resolution to the Government and to the member representing the district. From Mr A. W. Swift, pointing out the necessity for making a footpath on Tiech's road, adjoining hia property. Ifc was resolved to comply with the request conditionally. From the Courteuay Road Board, covering resolution passed by that body in reference to the damage caused to roads by traction engines, and pointing out the necessity for testing the right of traction engine owners to carry on extraordinary traffic to the detriment of ,public property, and that the grievance be abated. It was resolved to reply that the Riccarton Road Board could noc seeTts way to put obstacles in the way of traction' engine owners, believing such traffic to be a public benefit. From Messrs Alexander aud Kemp, asking permission to take a few loads of shingle from the Board's reserves. Granted. From the Avon Road Board, stating that the Kapatone Creek had been cleaned out, and asking for an inspection. Referred to the Surveyor. From Mr G. Swarm, en- ; closing transfer of land for road at Belfast. I Resolved that the road bo accepted and the seal of the Board D 3 affixed to the deed. The Chairman reported haying arranged for the purchase, of three acres of R.S. No. 180, adjoiningtt&frfMiddletbn reserve. The Board approved and confirmed the purI chase. Mr W. Lake forwarded plan of part i R.S. No. 102 at Fendalton. It was resolved to inform Mr Lake that the Board would gltdly consider any suggestions he might make with respect to the road adjoining the property sho.wn. r oti plan. The Board resolved to levy a'geueral road rate of one
half-penny in the pound. It was resolved | { to gravel Fleming street, Belfast. CL«»e j Surveyor's report was approved. e | Clerk reported that the alterations in the J valuation roll had been made in terms of clause 35 of the RaMng Act, 1894, and now waited the iuitials of the Chairman. After pas-sing accounts, &c, the Board adjourned.
