Auctr-iN. Festival. — The Y.M-C.A. antumn festival will take place to-night in the Hall of the V.M.C.A., when a varied programme will be submitted. Prohibition League.—Tho Christchuroh Prohibition League has secured the Congregational schoolroom, Manchester atreet, for iis weekly meetings. Concert.—A concert in aid of the Brunner Fund was given last night in the Oddfellows' Hall, under the auspices of the No. 1 L.0.L., Linwood. There was a good attendance, and the various items on the programme were very satisfactorily given. Masonic.—The regular monthly meeting of the Saint. Albans Lodge. 2597 E.C., will bo held at the St. Augustine Masonic Hall to-morrow evening at 7.30. The R.W. District G.M. and offi.ers ofD.G.L. will pay an official visit, aud present the warrant of the Lodge.

S.s. Wakatipo.—The departure of this steamer for Melbourne via port, haa been postponed till "o-morrow, as she did not arrive at Wellington from Sydney till six •.'clock yesterday evening, and had a quantity of coal to discharge before continuing her voyage.

The Late Mc Pembkr-O**-.—Tbe funeral of the late Mr F. A. Pemberton will take place this afternoon, at 4 o'clock. Attentiou is called elsewhere to th_ alteration of the address from where the faneral will start, which will be from Miss Aahwin'a residence, Hagley House, 275 Armagh str._t, instead of 16 Park terrace.

Surplus Lamocr League.— The regular meeting of the Committee was held on .'nesday. Additional replies had been received in response to the Committee's circular re proposed conference, but as all replies had nob come in no action could be taken. The day of meeting was changed to Monday. The final reading and discussion of the amended rules and by-laws took place, the Committee directing them to be printed as soon as practicable.

Mdlle. Tr_ue__i_ Coxckrt.—Tonighb, at the Temple of Truth, Mdlle. Trebclli will give a concert, the programme for which should fill the building. The numbers allotted to Mdlle. Trebelli are as follows:—"Bolero," from " Vepres Sicilli.nnes ;" •" Shadow Song," from " Dinorah;" Mattei's charming song, "Dear Heart;'' and "The Last Rose of Summer." Miss L. Thompson, Messrs Salvini, Prouse, Nottingham, and Faulkner will also assist. Miss M. B. Vartha will play the accompaniments.

The Charitable Aid Eoard.—Ab the ordinary meeting of the Charitable Aid Board yesberday, the meetiugs were fixed to be held on a different day to those of the Hospital Board. Christchurch Liedertafel. —The next herren abend of the Christchurch Liedertafel has been fixed to take place at Hobbs's Assembly Rooms on Friday, May Bth. Cycling Record. —Mr H. Thompson started out yesterday to try to reduce the road record from Lseston pub up by Pibher, but he failed to do so.

Literary Association.—-The weekly meeting of St. John's Association, Lyttelton, was held on Tuesday evening. Mr Laurenson occupied the chair. Short papers read by Messrs T. Rodger, A. B. McCreedy, and M. Taylor, on " Coal and its formation," " Superstition," and " Dancing " respectively made up the business of the evening. The papers were fully criticised, and an enjoyable evening was spent.

The Addikgtok Gaol.—At the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board yesterday the final arrangements in connection, with the taking over of tbe Addington Gaol buildings by the Sb, Saviour's Guild were completed. The St. Saviour's Guild are undertaking the work of taking charge of the old women who infeat our streets, and no better work has been done than' this.

"How Shiftless."—lt will be remembered that Miss Ophelia in " Uncle Tom's Cabin" was continually inveighing against the sbiftlessness of human nature. The Inspec-tor-General of Hospitals has apparently adopted Miss Ophelia's notions, for in a formidable document asking for statistics of the causes of poverty, " shifblessueas" is one of the headings 6f the numerous columns. The Gala Prizes—The Committee in connection with the late gala at Lancaster Park, desire to acknowledge with thanks, donations of prizes from the following :— Strange and Co., Ballantyne and Co., D.I.C, Wardell Brothers, Simpson and Williams, TJ.B.D.
