ARRIVAL OF THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY'S RAKAIA.
Yesterday morning the New Zealand Shipping Company's magnificent cargo steamer Rakaia, Captain G. M. Banks, R.N.R-, arrived from London, via ports of call, Auckland and Wellington. This is the Rakaia's first visit to New. Zealand, and she i? the most perfect steamer that has ever visited Lyttelton. The Rakaia was built last year by Messrs Hawthorn aud Leslie, at Newcastle-on Tyne, for the New Zealand Shipping Company. Her net register w 3660 tons, aud her gross 5623 tons. She ha 3 carrying capacity for 8000 tons dead weight, equal to about 11,000 tons measurement. In addition, she carries 2220 tons coal and 1360 tons water ballast. Her engines are of the most perfect typo ou the inverted triple expansion principle, the diameter of the cylinders being 36, 48, and 78 inches. Her indicated horsepower is 3000 ; the engines are capable of driving the steamer at twelve knots, and are fitted with Marshall's patent valve motion. There are three boilers fitted with Howden's forced draught, and the daily consumption of coal is thirty-eight tons. There is perfecc accommodation lor twelve saloon passengers, and steerage accommodation for over 300. The quartern of the officers are extremely good. Altogether the Rakaia is a vessel of which her owners and commander have every every reason]to be proud.
