REAL PROGRESS.
TO THB EDITOR OF SHS PRBSS. Sir, —If some of the numerous Societies in this city, instead of going in for all kinds of socialistic or semi-socialistic fads and fancies, and tormenting the public with brand new schemes for regenerating the world at other people's expense, would devote their time and attention to encouraging new industries, we might experience real progress and ' find employment for large numbers of men out of work. There ia so much time and brain-power devoted to these accursed (I use the word deliberately) politics and social problems that the real advancement of the country is neglected, and in clinging to the skirts of the State dry-nurse people seem to have no energy for far more practical things. Let mc give an jtiuai.ce. Take the rooting of this city, j which is nearly all gr.lvw.iwd iron, aj
very inferior material and iuartistio to a degree whether painted or not. Why should so much money be sent away when tiles could be made ou the spot. They are more artistic, if well made practically imperishable, and far more suitable iv every respect. In some reoent experiments the thormometer showed that the temperature was 15 dsgrees hotter under galvanised iron roofs thau under tiled ones. Galvanised iron is also no protection against cold. Can no one be induced to locally manufacture thoroughly g-iod tiles. It is high time people here took a new departure in this direction, and I think the architects aud builder-; are to blame in not setting their faces against the use of so much poor, uusubstautial, and perishable mttemls as are now in such general use.— Youts.&j., Self Help.
