DISCOVERY OF COAL.
The Auckland correspondent of the Otago Daily Times telegraphs:—G. S. Budge has received intelligence from F. W. Armitage, who is prospecting for coal on Crown lands in the North, to the effect that a splendid seam of coal had been discovered. Mr Budg* got Mr George Boyd, R.N., fleet engineer, to accompany him on a visit to the field. Boyd is well qualified to speak with regard to coal deposits, as he reported on the Weatport coal for the British Admiralty when out here some years ago with the late Admiral Tryon. The result of the visit is that Mr Budge has applied for a lease of 300 acres. The field is situated between Waitangi and Takeke rivers, about fifteen miles north-east from Wangarei. Comparative tests have been made of a quantity of the coal by Mr Boyd for steaming purposes, with most valuable results. A party of men are now driving into the spur, and arrangements have been made for a system of boringa to prove the extent of the field.
