THE NATIVE TROUBLES.
(7BBSS ASSOCIATION TSLSCtBAM.)
WELLINGTON, April 7. The Premier telegraphs from Kumar* that all .anxiety in respect to the Native encampment ab Nngato, and also Maori Parliament at Tokaaua are at an end. Kegarding the former he had received the following telegram from S.M. Clendon :— ♦' Be Nag&to encampment. I have settled ■ the matter and allowed the people to remain and dig gum by giving up their arms to mc as a pledge of good faith. 'Cheae arms are in the Courthouse here to-day. The leader, Tonia, has completely eucoumbed, and hit promised to.pay the dog tnx at onoe. Thu was done last Monday. The prompt measures taken with regard to the Arms Act, together with the refusal of all outside people to join the movement, has doubtless boen a strong factor in the Natives giving up their arms. Strict surveillance will be still kept up." Replying to the Premier's telegram, : Te Kuihu -telegraphs to Mr Soddon that he was glad to have advice from the Native Minister, which advice he would uphold. He regretted that the Natives had aoted illegally in inflicting fines on Europeans. The reason given for this was to keep reckless riding within bounds, so as to protect children's lives, eeeing chat the main road ran through the settlement. The chiefs assembled invited the Native Minister to visit them, and have promised that they will always uphold his laws. ~ The Premier has accented this expression of re* gret, and has arranged for a constable to remain at the encampment, though, no further trouble ia anticipated. 8.M.., Olendon and Inspector Emerson have shown great firmness and tact iv dealing with than cases.
