— ♦ ' ./. v . (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) s AUCKLAND, February 1. 7 News from Samoa, dated January 11th, * reports an alarming volcanic disturbance iv '• the group on Christmas day. Native re--8 porte from Tutuila state- that the eruption - took place in the Jfalelina district. Twenty c people lost their lives by being buried in a the falling ashes, but there are no further detaik. At Fagaloa the harbour waters were agitated by a submarine force, and stones, ashes, and water were thrown into the air. A heavy earthquake occurred, and the waters of the bay were very hot. It is reported that smoke issued from a hill at the back of fagaloa harbour. * February 2. The Herald's Ssmoa correspondent writes that the earthquake on Christmas Day did '"- much damage. At one place a stone 8 church was thrown down. The Catholic Church on the Vala Mountain, just behind ' Apia, was much injured. Wooden buildings swayed to and fro in a most alarming manner, and a number of stone ~ feeces were levelled to the ground. Nothing so severe has been experienced there within j the memory of the natives .or Europeans.
