A. new industry ia about to be added to those already established in Oatnaru. Mr (Smith, of DuDediu, lias commenced the erection on the Harbour Board reclamation of a baildiug lOOtt long by 40tt wide, which is to be used for canning and curing tiah. Mr Smith was recently the owner of small refrigerating works in Dunedin, and he has also fish caring works there. He, however, inteuds to make Ounaru the ceutr*l depot for hi* busiue3B, and fish will be received from Mooraki, Timaru, Oamaru, and along the coast. Here they will be cured or cauned as they best suit. (J*maru is the only place where moki and sprats are obtained in any quantity, and these fish, under Mr Smith's caro, will be capable of being put to inoro profitable uae than previously. The sprats (or sardines as some experts call them) were practically wasted last year, but it is unlikely that this will again occur.
