COMMERCIAL NOTES.
,©, THE AMERICAN TARIFF ON WOOL. The progress of tho London colonial wool sales, as advised through cable dispatches (says the New York Journal of Commerce, of December 7th), has served as a stimulus for markets on this side of the ocean. Tho strength of tone reported leads importers to adhere to full quotations on such supplies as they now have on hand, and the influence therefrom is found on some qualities of domestic growth. Nevertheless, a, careful analysis of the advices from the foreign sales shows that the firmness is confined almost entirely ta high grade full grown staple merinos, of which the clip is reported short some 200,000 bales ; while on medium and inferior combings aud clothing wools the tone is really easy, the supply of these wools promising well. Toe week's trading in all kindß of wool has beeu light, and manufacturers indicate a desire to postpone investments until after turn of year. . The action ot tho Wool Growers' Association in moving for a re-enactment of the McKinloy duty schedule docs not appear to find very hearty endorsement here. Entirely independent of views entertained upon the question of tariff, operators seem to think that the agitation of a revision now is at least premiture, in view of the probable chances against any change of so radical a charactci, and attempts to force legislation will, it is feared, serve as a protracted disturbing factor.
