WEDNESDAY'S PRODUCE REPORT.
(BY OUR COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) Farmers are beginning to offer samples of oats, ryegrass aud oatsheaf chaff, but buyers are very little disposed to operate at all at present, and are awaiting developments in outside markets to assist them iv arriving at a fair idea at what openicg prices are likely to settle down at. There are still fair stocks of old grain and seed to be disposed of, and merchants naturally prefer clearing out the previous season's surpluses before operating at ail in the new grain. Hence farmers will probably find it will be more satisfactory to await a more active and absorbent market, before pressing sales too early in the season. Wheat—Millers are buying very cautiously, and only as absolute necessities force them to, but it is generally believed that tho bulk of what is left of the 1895 crop will still be required before the newcrop wheat ia fairly passing into consumption. Prices are somewhat erratic, aud are still more nominal than actual. Pearl is most in demand, and commands up to 3s lOd f.0.b., Lyttelton; Tuscan and Hunter's are nominally worth about 2d to 31 below this price. Oats—Prices have eased down during the past few weeks, owing to the almost entiro absence of outside demand. Holders in store, however, are, generally speaking, holding firmly, and probably within the next few weeks a better enquiry will be i apparent. Parcels of early new crop mean- ■ time arc neglected, aud growers wiil probably Gad it advisable to hold them back j for a firmer enquiry. I Baklsv —At present outside markets do not appear to be wanting supplies, and it may be some weeks yet before it. is definitely ascertained if we shall have an outlet for our surplus supplies. [These quotations, unless otherwise specified, are the net cash prices paid to the producer free of brokerage or commi»sicn, and for delivery at country stations within a ticenty-five mile radius of town. For delivery on board ship at Lyttelton add 2d to per bushel.']
