TO TUB EDITOR OF TUB PRESS. Sir, —Had you not introduced this gentleman to us as a journalist of eminence from New York, we should have taken him to be the usual Yankee Editor of modest assurance. However, I am glad to notice that your correspondents, "Gunpowder" and "Englishman," have given the respect to his utterances which they are entitled to. Mr Cassidy remarks that this is a quiet, dreamy place. Quite so. And yet a good number of us keep posted up on the questions of the day. As far as my reading goes, I take it that the Venezuelan question is a simple one of title. British Guiana was taken from the Dutch long before Monroe or his doctrine were heard of. Mr Cassidy does not appear to be aware of this. lb would be a good joke if this well-performed journalist were to learn something in this sleepy place. Verax. 15th January, 1896. TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE PRES3. Sir, —Following up the correspondence iv your issue of this morning re Mr Casaidy'B opinions, a friend of mine, sitting at the public dinner-table of one of our city hotels some few years since, heard the following reply given to some derogatory spreadeagleisms made by an Irish American towards England—the fuuny part of it is in the fact that the reply came from a genuine American travelling with his wife through New Zealand, and who was also at the table. Our frieud, looking steadily across at the Hibernian, said :—" I guess it's just this sort of blanked whitewashed Yankees who shame us genuine Americans.'' Appears to mc history repeats itself.—Yours, &c, True Bill.
