A RARE FISH.

The New Zealand Times publishes tho following paragraph: —"An interesting experiment iv fish acclimatisation in Queenslaud was recently undertaken by Mr D. O'Connor, of Oxley, on behalf of the Royal Society of Queensland. The ceratodus, which is one of the oldest types of animal life in existence, is a true fish, but as it breathes by meaus of lungs as well as gills it may be regarded as a link between the fish aud the reptile. It exists in no part of the world but the rivers. Mary and Burnett. Small or even moderate-sized specimens are never met with, though Urge ones are not at present rare. The belief consequently is that the species is dying out, aud scientists are of opinion that something should be done in oraer to preserve from extinction this Very interesting fish. With this end in view Mr O'Conoor has visited its present habitat several times, a number of fish were captured, twenty of which were safely transferred to and liberated in new waters from one to two hundred miles south of the Mary. Mr O'Connor who is an enthusiast in fish, is now on a visit to New Zealand, and hopes to see something of our acclimatised as well as native fish.
