AUCKLAND.

Auckland, December 23. The following players have been chosen by the Auckland Cricket Association to go into practice in view of the forthcoming match against New South Wales on January 7th and Bth :—D. Clayton, D. Hay, W. Hawkins, F. V. Kelly, H. W. Lawson, I. Mills, R. Neill, F. J. Ohlson, Dr. Pabst, C. Stone, N. Williams, E. Wright, and W. T. Wynyard. This list is still subject to alteration.

The Parnell Club have not yet finished out their match with United. It is probable the latter will forfeit the game. On, Saturday Gordon met Parnell. Gordon, on going in first, had the advantage of fine weather and an excellent wicket, but they were all dismissed for 89, contributed namely by Gould (17), Ball (35), and Henery» (30). When stumps were drawn for the day Parnell had made 165 for four wickets only, a score which practically gives them the match. Of this, Wright, our crack wicketkeeper, contributed 62 (not out) in excellent style, and Ohlsen made 39 and Mills 16. Auckland v. United.—ln this match Auckland has a lead, which more than promises to give them tho match. United made 85, (D. Hay 26 and Brown 28), and Auckland have made 169 for three wickets. Playing for Auckland D. Clayton contributed a fine innings of 126, (not out), marred by two or three chances after the century was reached, but otherwise, his innings was the result of sound cricket. Clayton also was the most successful bowler, taking four wickets for 22 ruus.

A PROTEST FROM AUCKLAND. Auckland, December 30. It will surprise mc if the Auckland

Cricket Association do not protest strongli to the New Zealand Cricket Council about the shabby treatment our criokotors liavt received in tho choosing of tho team to represent New Zealand against tho New South Wales team. The team was not selected till it was too late for any of our players, who might have been included in the eleven, to reach Christchurch in time to assist in the match. When it was seen outside that the Selection Committee was composed of throe gentlemen, one each from Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington, it was the general opinion that Auckland cricketers would receive fair and impartial treatment. It was generally believed here that if no other Auckland player would bo chosen, Wright, who is a sterling batsman, and (according to the opinion of one oE the best authorities on cricket in the colonioa, tho Hon. J. S. Udal, of tho Fiji cricket team) the best wicket-keeper in Nov,' Zealand, would be selected. However, Auckland has no representative on tho Selection Committee, and therefore had no man worth a place in the New Zealand team. TUatthe South Island should have been given two men on the Selection Committee and the North Island only one also seems most unfair, and it is certainly very strange that the North Island should have only two batsmen and no bowlers class enough" to be picked in the eleven, while Christchurch and Dunedin supply four each and South land one.
