SMOKING ON TRAMS. TO THE EDITOR OF TUB PRKSS. Sir, —la it not time that eomo steps were taken to prevent certain of the " male perBuasion " from showing their excessive selfishness in wishing to monopolise the topa of tram cars, especially on holid&ys, by puffing tobacco smoke into the faces of ladies and children who may be eeated neat them ? If the " weed " smoked on Boxing Day on the Sumner trams had been consumed in the motors very little coil would have been required. But those who offended in this nay only considered their own vicious appetites, and to use the words of a lady who had a large hole burnt in her dress by a " penny puff" falling from the mouth of a young noodle sitting by her side, and who had not tho decency to apologise-— ,, some men are as bad with theii tobacco as babies with their bottles—they must be always eucking." One of these beings, on having his attention called to the fact that the smoke from his pipe was being blown into the faces of several ladies in the same seat, "grunted" out that he would Binoke as long aa he liked, and if the ladies objected they could go inside. Men (?) who would like to debar ladies from the luxury of a little fresh air should be taken in hand by their grandmothers or mothera-in-law, and taught that while men are out and abroad all day, women are frequently shut) up with crying babiee and endless needlework, and a change of scene with fresh air is a luxury that should not be marred by the sickening fumes from dirty pipet.— Yours, &c, CONSIDEBATIOH.
