December 24. Two Ashantee chiefs, supposed to be traitors, are proceeding to the coast to interview the Governor. Friendly natives, who possess large stores of powder and munitions of war, are in the vicinity of Goomassie. GOVERNOR OF GUIANA. Sir Augustus Hemming has be_n appointed Governor of British Guiana. ENGINES FOR WESTERN • AUSTRALIA. The Western Australian Government has accepted the tender of Neilson's firm, Glasgow, for the construction of ten railway engines. They will be shipped during the next six months. NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. The National Bank of New Zealand has declared an interim dividend at the rate of 5 per cent, per annum. ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION. Mr Borchgrevinck is arranging for whalers to land a dozen scientists on Cape Adair and to maintain them for a year, so that they may thoroughly explore that portion of the Antarctic regions. ANOTHER EXPLOSION. December 25. By an explosion in the coal bunkers of H.M.S. Repulse, at Chatham, nine men were injured. THE EASTERN QUESTION. <3onstant_nopi_e, December 25. Incessant fighting is reported from Zeitoun, with heavy losses on both sides.
