THE MARKETS.

Press Association—By Telegraph Copyright.

London, November 22.

At auction 3987 cases of kauri gum were offered and 1489 cases sold. There is a slow demand, and holders are very firm. Three-quarter scraped sold at 88s 6d; half-scraped, 60s; pickings, 40s. No New Zealand hemp was offered. The wool sales at Bradford are more active; merinos are a shade firmer, while crossbreds are weak. The total quantity of wool arrived up to date is 160,000 bales, in addition to which there are 10,000 bales held over from the last series; 20,000 bales have been sent direct to the manufacturing districts, and it is expected that about 170,000 will be available for the forthcoming sales. Sydney, November 28. The wool sales for the week closed strong, with a healthy tone and an undiminished activity in competition; 32,100 bales were offered and 28,400 sold. In all the better classes the advances were fully maintained, but with inferior sorts the disinclination to buy was more marked. The Americans were the largest buyers, but the English and Continental dealers took a fair share. The produce market continues firm and prices are well maintained. Maize is distinctly stronger at 3s 3d. Butter and bacon are hardening. The drought is again very severe in the Southern and Western districts. Grass and water are extremely scarce, and in many instances the crops are ruined. The fruit crops are a failure. Melbourne, November 23. Breadstuffs are slightly easier. Wheat, 3s 10£ dto 3s lid. Flour, £9 15s to £10. Adelaide, November 23. Wheat, firm. Buyers quote 4s Id for old, but sellers hold out for Id more.
