TRADES AND LABOUR ' COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Tradet and Labour Council was held in Ingliv Buildings on Saturday evening, when; aH Unions affiliated wcro represented. A lettei was received from the Wellington Trade- 1 Council, stating that they bad paaaad a resolution urging upon the Mini-ties' for Labour the necessity of pre~<> iog on hii Undesirable Immigrants' Bill in view of the fact that a number of Assyrians had been recently landed in New Zealand ; and, farther, that the young man found on the Tinakori road had arrived from England, in destitute circumstances, and, being deformed, was likely to become a burden on the taxpayers of the colony, it was resolved that this Council endorse the action of the Wellington Trades Council. A resolution was passed instructing the Secretary to write to the Hon. Mr Bolt, congratulating him on the comprehensive resolutions introduced by him into the Legislative Council, also expressing sympathy with him in the meagre support accorded to him by members of that Chamber. It was resolved that this Council strongly protests against the action of the Government in interfering with the sele£. tion of a candidate in the recent by-electioa in Auckland, believing' it to bo opposed to the principle of Democracy, viz., Govern* meat of the people by the people. A resolution was passed expressing regret that the Central Council of Auckland had' given way to the dictation of the Government. It was also resolved that this Council views with regret the action of the Government in amending the tariff in the interests of revenue instead of doing jio with a view to foster local industries. It was resolved tint the Minister ot Labour be requested to put into operation at once the machinery of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act.
