THE POSTAL CONFERENCE.

Press Association—By Telegraph Copyright London, February 7. The Steamship Companies have declined to accelerate speed to thirty days, increase cold storage space, reduce freights or employ only white men on board. They have agreed to call at Colombo both ways, and that the mails shall include parcels after February next. Thia will mean a saving to the colonies of £1000 per annum. Mr A. Morley, Postmaster-General, has extended the term of the contract to two years. He will write to the colonies respecting other proposals made at the Postal Conference at Wellington last year. Hobabt, February 8. At the Postal Conference this morning the Hon. A. G. Thynne, of Queensland, announced that he would recommend his Government to join in the, cable guarantee. The reduced postage to England he thought inopportune at present. The insurance of parcels, and the reduction of the commission on money orders to the United Kingdom he could not recommend. The remainder of the business was finished this afternoon. A universal telegraph code vocabulary was favourably regarded, but the Conference would not commit itself to the code issued at Berne. In case of the interruption of a cable it recommended that press messages should be given precedence. • . . The next Conference will be held at Melbourne.
