The Victorian Trotting Association intend to call upon the owner and rider of Miss Starr, the winner of the Distance Handicap Trot at Maribyrnong on January lOch to explain Miss Starr's inconsistent performances. The recently re-formed New Brighton Trotting Club has drawn up a programme for March 14lh, with stakes amounting to £190. Messrs Brinkman and White have been appointed handicappers. The JPiumpton Park executive should be, and no doubt are, highly pleased with the splendid entry received for the meeting that takes place on Saturday week. Each of the events have filled well, and In all 160 nominations are set down. ■The class, too, is very good, aud a sure sign that the covering season is over, is that a few of the stallions are engaged. Kentucky is in the Dash Handicap, and Sacramento, the colt imported from America, in the Maiden Harness. The Greymouth Trottine Club Intend holding a gathering on March 10th, the day after the Greymouth Jockey Club's Meeting. The stakes amount to £115. The Dunedin correspondent of this journal wires:—Native's time In the three Mile Trot on the first day of theTapauui Meeting was Satin, thus equalling Wanderoo's record. I have had tho clocking verified, and it may be taken as correct. Mr C. Kerr has parted with his old gelding Sonny to a Palmerston North resident. The price received was £40. First class entries have been taken for the Tahuna Park Meeting, which takes place on February 22nd. A meeting of the Committee ot the Lancaster Park Amateur Trotting Club was held Ja*t Friday evening. The Chairman reported that he had made an offer for the lease of offices for the Club's use, but the term, had not been arranged. The following applicants for election as amateur riders were approved:—J. Reynolds, J. L. Carl, D. Kin-bell, W. Hutchison, J. A. Connell, Chas. Shcpheard, H. H. Barlow, F. J. Jackman.fi. Hay ward, M. Driver, E. E. Lelievre, W. H. Brinkman. V. Harris, J. Fleming, L. Donald, C. P. Hullett, and J. Wvatt. Several other applications were held over pending further enquiries. The Secretary submitted a letter from C. W. The Wellington T.C. have made some improvements at Mlramar since I last visited that part, and when the work of reclaiming the drift sand In the vicinity is accomplished and the track further made up with top dressings ot clay and earth, the meetings at Miramar will become endurable. On Wednesday of last week the day was moat favourable, and there was little dust to speak of. The attendance was fairly pood, speculation quite up to expectations, and the trotting In several of tho races was well worth witnessing, some of the best handicap horses in the colony being starters. The time occupied by Beware in the Maiden gives no indication of her speed She will do better when fit and well and on a Rood track. None of the other Maiden candidates are worth talking about. The beat of them will never make even tlmtra and it may be a lone: time before any of them even do that. The scratch horses received 25* ec from Beware, whose time was ftnln 25sec, ao It will be seen what beauties acme of them were, Nancy waa fancied a good deal bat failed to show any form. 'It was a treat to see Pearl (late Bnby), an Australian pony byChUde Harold, trot through har field is haxotea, bat
had not Rita tired «he might have got home. However Pearl U a sweet good goer, and there are few ponies that can take her number down. Billy Buttons in saddle equalled her time in harness over the came distance, and he covered two miles and a-half in 7min 16 3-sth sec, also showing that he is quite as good as ever h». was. J. Taggart trained and rode him. Vaucliff*, who wan second in the bis event, is a fairhor.se. Rose, the Canterbury mare, was no good to them. Old Cotherstone was seen to better advantage than he has been for a long time in the Selling Race. Invictus, driven by Mouat, won the Miramar Handicap, but someone is supposed to. have pricked the pneumatic tyre of Keith's sulky and let out the wind, as it collapsed on one side when Lady Jane looked to have the race wou. luvictus, however, is a useful and ° fast horse. J.H. was backed well for tiiis race, but could have had no chance at this handicap. He was trotted in a heavy high wheeled rickety sulky. Nea was made a hot favonrite fur the Electric Handicap, but, swerving at- tho start, lost eighty yard* or more, and Invictus created a big surprise br winning and paying; a dividend of £14 4s. In the Pony Saddle Race, Black Oats ah owed temper and did not leave the post at the right time. Keith had bad luck at the rr-eefclng with his team, not scoring a win. T.ie club will make a fair profit over the meeting, some of which will probably ne spent on further improving the grounds and tha track. The secretary of the Wellington Trotting Club, Mr Woon, is a good and enthusiastic worker for his club, and ha will stand no nonsense from the betting or " spieling " brigade. Atotaiisator bettor was ejemed by him at the recent meeting in double quick time.
