From tho Commissioner 01. Crown Lands, Nelson, stating that, in pursuance of a promise made to Parliament last session, the Government is desirous of obtaining information relative to the expediency or otherwise of a measure dealing with what is known as "fair rent" of all classes of land, both public and private, and in order to assist the Government in obtaining the requisite information requesting tho Council to an* swer certain questions as to a Fair Rent Bill; from the Minister of Lands, informing the" Council that the Government has granted'£l2o towards the ol that portion of the Blenheim-Waiau road wilhiu this county; and from the Secretary to the Treasury, stating that a voucher for the payment of loan of £940 for water-race construction has passed audit, and that that amount would be placed to the Councii'r credit in a few days. The balance at the Bank to the debit ot the County fund account is £37 4s 7d. and to the credit of the Water-race account £78 16s 4d, and of the Government loans to local bodies account 10a.
It was resolved that a special meeting of the Council be held on March 2nd next, to make a special order to adopt by-laws preventing traction engines of a greater weight than two tons from crossing over the Lower Waiau and Glen Allan bridges within this county ; that the Council approve generally of the Fair Rent Bill, and that, the Clerk return schedule filled in accordingly; and that the Minister of Lands be informed that the Council accepts the grant for Blen-heim-Waiau road ; that the balance of the Woodbauk road be formed before next spring; that the Clerk apply to the uiauager Uinon Bank Australia for an overdraft for the Couucil.
The Inspector of Works for the waterrace reported that the best men employed by the contractor for constructing the Waiau Piaius water-race extonsion (with few exceptions) having left for the harvest, he was compelled to tall back on very in. ferior and unskilled hands, consequently the progress of the work was considerably retarded. There was stitlaboutl2o cubic yards of rock and about 1500 cubic yards of shingle to be removed from the bottom of the deep cutting near the head works. The contractor was confident that he will be able to finish this work within a month. Then the whole of the race would require to be trimmed up to .tho proper level, and the banks properly eloped off to the grade specified, and two bridges erected, which would take at least another fortnight to complete, making in all about six weeks from date. , The report was approved of. After passing accounts the Council adjourned.
