SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

A meeting of the East Christahurch Com* mittee was held at tho main school on Jauuary 31st. Present—Mr M. Saudstein (Chairman), and Messrs F. J. Board, J. "R. Brunt, H. Allison, J. Tippet. Smith, S. Clarke, M. Murphy, and J. 8. °WiHiams. An apology woa received for the absence of Mr Pentecost. It was resolved not to nominate any members for the Board. The headmaster reported that on the re-opening of the school there were .1043 at the main school. Twenty pupil teachers sat for examination, and all passed excepting one. W. - Brew, J. Forrester, F. C. Hall, J. Hadueld. B. Jones, W. Millar and C. Simpson. A letter was received from the Board of Education, advising that the four fourth year pupil teachers who passed their examination will be required to attend thel Normal School on reopening, and requesting the Committee' to select candidates for the vacancies. Eleven applications were received, and Maud Lancaster, ' Craig Peppier, May Simpson and' Georgo Maginness, were selected for the approval of the Board. Present — Messrs Wood, Pavitt, ISllison, Morrison and Bray. An apology wa9 received from Mr Scott, the Chairman, " and Mr Wood was voted to the chair. .The Head Master's report showed the average attendance for the last quarter to be 202, and that siuce the re-opening twenty new scholars had been admitted.'- A .vote of thanks was accorded' to thj ladies who examined the sewing, also to Mr Curry for. presenting, the ' prizDß.' The'.'lnspector's report was considered very satisfactory, and ' : a hearty vote of thanks.was passed to the ,- Head Master and assistants. It wa» decided to give Mr A. B. Charters a testimonial for. his work during his- term of pupil teacher- -. ship. It was resolved .to make application again to the Board to have the school buildings re-painted. v The Committee decided to'vote for Messrs Saunders, Webb aud S-wle as members of the Board. ■,

A meeting of the Flax ton School- Com* mittee was held on February 4th. Present —Mr Chatterton (Chairman), arid-Messrs Whitham,.'Doidge, Clothier," Larkham, and Orchard. The master's report on the main school was considered satisfactory.; . Also„ the report from'mistress of the side school. ' The Chairman was requested to have some " repairs done, and' to write to the Board of Education re larger repairs needed' to both schools. The voting to fill the vacancies on the Board of Education resulted in favour of the three retiring members. Tbe ordinary monthly meeting of the Southbridge School Committee'was held' on February 4tb. Present— Mr J. Frame (Chairman), Dr. Withers, and Messrs FPaddy, J, 0. Scott, Geo. Marquand, R. P. Hill, the Rev. E. Whitchouse, and W. W. Wilson. It was decided to vote for Messrs R. Westenra, S. R. Webb, and Dr. Moor* house as members of the ward. -The head* . master's report showed 278 on the roll and an average attendance of 203. The resignation of Miss F. Dick was ac«. cepied, aud the Chairman was instructed to write ifiss Dick tbe following resolution :— " The Committee, in accepting Miss Dick's resignation, regret that she ia severing her connection with the school, and the Committeefeel that the school is losing a most energetic and faithful teacher, beloved bjr the pupils and respected by the parents. , We tender to Miss Dick an expression of ' .our most earnest hope that her work in her new position may be highly successful, ana convey our best wishes for the future." Mr T. A. Gates, jun., was recommended to tbe Board for appointment as pupil teacher. It was decided to recommend Miss A. & Alexander for the appointment •of infant - , mistress. Accounts amounting, to £4, 7a were pawed for payment*
