WELLINGTON RACING CLUBS SUMMER MEETING. Second Day. (fuom our special reporter.) WELLINGTON, January 24. There was a very much diminished attendance at the races to-day, and notwithstanding the weather was fine the number fell below the average second day assemblages at the Hutt, the lawn, paddock and stands plainly inuicaiing that people had stayed away. Those who did reach the scene were fortunate iv seeing some excellent racing.' Indeed, in this particular tbe meeting was one of the most remakable that ha* ever taken place at the Hutt. The railway authorities had no difficulty iv providing carriages to-day. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's gelding North Atlantic opened the ball by winning the January Handicap in good style from Porepo and Golden Plover. Clarence ran a great race in the Hurdle Handicap. Many thought he came too soon, but Auroa only just got home and Revolt was 80 close that the proverbial sheet would have covered the three. Mahaki and Lady Zetland were better favourites than their opponent, Raogipuhi, in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, but in a true run race from end to end, and the fastest over this particular distance run at the Hutt, Rangipuhi fairly galloped them down. Getting away from tne start, he made the pace a cracker, running the last six furlongs under luiin l7sec Mahaki made a big bid to get up, but Rangipuhi was equal to the occasion, and won handsomely. Spruce was made favourite for tbe Juyenlle Handicap, Black and Red coming, next in demand, while Heavenly Twin, St. John and War Note were well backed. Mr Young, without the machine, was lost, but after a lot of trouble they were sent off fairly well. Trouble, however, commenced early, as Dissenter stuck his toes in, and black and Red fell. Spruce had evidently become distressed owing to freaueut breaks away, and though she led for half the journey was then done with, St. John winning meritoriously from Heavenly Twin, who failed at the last pinch. Musket ran away with the Second Welter Handicap, aud The Miser confirmed his running on the first day by winning the Hack Race from six others after a good race. Spindrift, the favourite io tbe Metropolitan• Handicap, never showed up, and Saracen under punishment got home after a capitsl race with Porepo and Britomarte. Golden Plover scored a bare victory in the Farewell Handicap in which five of the six starters finished all of a heap. A better race between five hones has not been seen at the Hutt. A total of £7707 was passed through the totalisator, making £18,188 for the two days. Results:—
