WEIGHT-GUESSING COMPETITION.

to the editor of the press. Sir, —While not wishing to take exception to the decision the Messrs Matson have given in the weight-guessing competition, I would draw attention to what seems to me a strange anomaly in the way it has worked out. Messrs Matßon gave three tests, viz., the weight of mutton, the weight of tallow, and the value of the skin ; in each of these tests I was nearer than Mr Rutherford, bis total variation from the actual result being Is 9d 4-oths, mine being Is ld 2-sths.

To show the absurdity of competition on these lines, had Mr Rutherford pnt the sheep at 601bs (actual weight 108 4-sths), and' the skins at 9s sd, he would still have been awarded the prize.—Yours, Sec, R. Darling. Christchurch, November 27th.
