FIRE ON A BARQUE.

NAPIER, October 23. A fire broke out on the barque Sarah. Ridgway, which was moored alongside the wharf, about five o'clock this morning. At tbat hour the man on the night watch observed smoke issuing from the hold of the vessel, and, giving the alarm, the Spit Brigade was speedily in attendance. The flames were subdued after about 4ft of water was poured into her from six lengtb** of hose, au abundant supply of water being available. The fire broke out in the sail locker, but the cause at present is unknown. Sho had ou board, amongst other cargo, 2500 cases of kerosene, a great many of which had the woodwork burned, and had the fire been permitted to burn a few minutes longer » serious explosion was inevitable. The vessel is in charge of Captain S. Jogren, and is owned by Mr Ridgway, of Philadelphia. She is uninsured. The extent of the damage cannot be estimated until a proper survey is made. The insurances ou the cargo are net known.
