REPORTED DEFEAT OF THE JAPANESE. THE DEFENCE OF PEKIN. Press A-soolaUou—By Telegraph— poo-frUrbt. Shanghai, Ootober 20. Another report ia circulated that forty thousand Japanese troops have just left Hiroshima ia thirty-live transports. One hundred thousand provincial troops are massing for the defence of Pekin. October 21. The Chinese military authorities have received reports of a great battle at Lower Yalu. The Japanese attacked the Chinese position, but were repulsed with heavy loss. Yokohama, October 19. The Mikado, in opening the Parliament at Hiroshima, said—." We will not stop the war till our objects are attained." The Mikado requests authority to borrow to tbe extent of a 100,000,000 dollars (£20,000,000 sterling). London, October 19. _s<m-V News, in t denying that the proposals submitted for the discontinuation of tbe war by Lord Roaebery bad been flouted, asserts that the majority of the Powers are io aooord with England as to the course whioh should be pursued with regard to China.
